Mazda All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Many of today's vehicles are equipped with a variety of features. Depending on the model, you may be able to choose between AWD and 4WD. Some people believe that these are the same thing, but they are not. Though the differences between the two can be perplexing, let's go over each of these systems so you can make an informed decision about which vehicle is best for you.

What exactly is All-Wheel Drive?

All-wheel drive means that the vehicle's powertrain drives both the front and rear wheels. There is a full-time AWD option that moves all four wheels continuously. A part-time system operates primarily in two-wheel drive mode but will switch to AWD for traction when necessary.

The AWD feature works without the driver having to do anything to activate the system, though a few models on the market offer more control options. Torque will be distributed to all four wheels via a system of differentials, couplings, and clutches.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Four-wheel drive is a feature that is typically found in larger vehicles such as SUVs and trucks. It transfers power to all four wheels by using a set of differentials in the front, center, and rear and transfer cases and couplings.

The 4WD system will send torque to all of your vehicle's wheels as needed, and it is available in full-time and part-time modes, just like AWD. When driving, you can also select from low and high ranges. Typically, this is accomplished via an electronic switch or a lever. The lowest setting provides the most traction, while the highest setting is useful for road surfaces that are only slightly slick, such as sand, snow, or gravel.

Every year, Aug. 15 marks National Relaxation Day. Americans are encouraged to pause, take a deep breath, and do whatever helps them relax and unwind. The premise of National Relaxation Day is that stress is increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, but few people take time out of their day to relax and reduce stress levels. This year, Lincoln participated in National Relaxation Day by encouraging people to unwind in a Lincoln vehicle while enjoying all the relaxation-inspiring features and components that Lincoln offers.
